Fenah and Sting turns 1 year!
On September 7th 2008 a dolphin calf was born at Kolmården Zoo for the first time in almost seven years. The calf, a little female, was the daughter of the, at that time, 9-year-old Lyra. Only two days later also Ariel, who was almost 12 years old, gave birth to her little son. The father of the two calves were Pichi, who had lived at Kolmården for almost three years. Now the dolphin calves, Fenah and Sting, turns 1 year old! Sting is now a very curious little dolphin that loves to look through the windows in the Lagoon while Fenah really likes to play with balls. Happy 10-year-old-birthday LYRA!
On July 12th 2009 Kolmården’s female bottlenose dolphin Lyra turned ten years old. Lyra was born on July 12th 1999 and she is currently one of the eight dolphins that live in Kolmården’s dolphinarium. Last year Lyra became a mother for the first time when she gave birth to her daughter Fenah. Fenah was the first dolphin to be born at Kolmården since Lyra’s little brother Fenix, who now lives at Marineland Antibes, was born in 2001. Dolfinarium Harderwijk’s porpoise Amber is pregnant!
In August 2007 the first porpoise calf in captivity was born. This porpoise (who later was named Frigg-Amanda) was born at Fjord&Baelt in Denmark and was the daughter of the porpoises Freja and Eigil who both arrived at Fjord&Baelt when they got stuck in fishing nets when they were calves. Now the world’s second porpoise calf is expected to be born this year (2009) but this time it is Dolfinarium Harderwijk that has a pregnant porpoise female. This porpoise female is named Amber and arrived at Dolfinarium Harderwijk when she stranded in 2007. As Amber was an adult when she stranded she may have given birth to calves before she stranded but it is unknown if she has or has not given birth to any calves. This year Dolfinarium Harderwijk also has three pregnant bottlenose dolphins that are all expected to give birth to their calves this summer.
Nellie turns 56!
On February 27th 2009 the world’s oldest dolphin Nellie turns 56 years old! At Marineland Florida, where Nellie lives, her birthday will be celebrated with both song and cake. According to Marineland’s web site Nellie will get a cake with fish. At 56 years Nellie is clearly the oldest dolphin in captivity, even if there are several dolphins that are approaching 50 years. Dolphins of Nellie’s species are normally living for 35-40 years so Nellie is really special with her almost 60 years!
Lilly is dead
Lilly, one of the most special dolphins at Marineland Florida passed away on February 10th 2009, of pneumonia. Lilly was almost 50 years old but that was not the only reason why she was so special, she was beige unlike most bottlenose dolphins that are grey. Many years ago there were several beige dolphins at Marineland Florida but unfortunately all of these have died and Lilly was the last one. That was the reason why she often was called “The last blonde dolphin”. Lilly’s real name was Lilly Champagne and she lived at Marineland for 45 years. Even if Lilly was almost 50 years old (she was at least 47 years old when she died) she was not the oldest dolphin at Marineland Florida. In about 2 weeks Nellie turns 56 years old!
Pasku and Tikal!
On December 4th 2008 a male dolphin was born at Dolphin Academy. The mother was DeeDee and the father was Copan and the calf was soon named Tikal. 21 days later another dolphin calf was born at Dolphin Academy. This time the mother was Tela and this calf was a male too. In January 2009 Dolphin Academy started a name contest to name their youngest dolphin and from February 2nd and on you could vote for four of the names that had been sent in to Dolphin Academy. On February 12th the name contest was closed and the name of the little male became Pasku!
Ginger is back in the sea
On December 16th 2008 a female bottlenose dolphin stranded. The dolphin was named Ginger and she was taken to the Mote Marine Lab (in Florida, USA) where she was rehabilitated. Already before Ginger stranded she was known by the researchers that are studying the dolphins that are living where Ginger lived before she stranded. For example it was known that she was born in 2005 and that she was her mother’s first calf. It was also known that Ginger’s mother gave birth to a calf in 2008 and that Ginger’s grandmother is about 50 years old. Ginger was released back to the sea after two months of rehabilitation, on February 9th 2009.
Takara has been moved
The 18-years old orca Takara was moved on February 5th 2009 from Seaworld Orlando to Seaworld San Antonio. Takara was born on July 9th 1991 at Seaworld San Diego and she is the daughter of Kasatka and Kotar (deceased). In 2002 Takara gave birth to her first calf, the female Kohana who currently lives at Loro Parque. In 2004 Takara and Kohana were moved to Seaworld Orlando and in 2005 Takara gave birth to her second calf, Trua. Trua still lives at Seaworld Orlando. The other orcas at Seaworld San Antonio, where Takara lives now, are Kyuquot, Unna, Keet and Tuar, all younger than Takara. Before Takara arrived to Seaworld San Antonio she had met Keet because they lived at Seaworld San Diego at the same time.
The beluga Aurora is pregnant
Vancouver Aquarium’s beluga Aurora is pregnant and will give birth to her calf in June/July 2009. Aurora is the mother of two belugas, Qila and Tuvaq, and she is also the grandmother of Tiqa who was born in 2008. The father of Aurora’s calf is Imaq who also is the father of Tiqa and Tuvaq. Aurora lives together with Qila and Tiqa while Imaq lives together with the female beluga Kavna in a behind-the-scenes pool.
The orca Sharkane is dead
Marineland Antibes’ orca Sharkane passed away on January 3rd 2009 after 2 months of illness. She was about 24 years old when she passed away and she had lived at Marineland Antibes since 1990. Sharkane was the mother of the 3 orcas Inouk, Shouka and Wiki. Marineland Antibes now has 4 orcas: Wiki, Freya, Inouk and Valentin.
Luna turns 8!
Kolmården’s dolphin Luna turns 8 on January 10th! She was born at Kolmården Zoo in 2001 and her parents are Vicky (36 years old) and Flip (died when he was 41 years old, in 2003). When Luna was 4 years old her younger halfbrother Fenix was moved to Marineland Antibes and Luna became the youngest dolphin at Kolmården Zoo. She nursed until she was about 6,5 years old and she is still swimming a lot with her mother Vicky. In September 2008 Luna’s sister Ariel and halfsister Lyra both gave birth to their first calves and now Ariel’s calf Sting is the youngest dolphin at Kolmården.
