Kolmården’s dolphin calves Sting and Fenah!
Kolmården’s female dolphins Lyra and Ariel gave birth to their calves in September 2008. Lyra’s female calf was born on September 7th and Ariel’s male calf was born just two days later, on September 9th. The father of the calves is Pichi who has lived at Kolmården Zoo for three years. In November a name contest was started and in December Lyra’s calf was named Fenah and Ariel’s calf was named Sting. The calves and the rest of the dolphins at Kolmården can be watched at a webcam.
Vancouver Aquarium’s beluga calf has been named!
On October 24th 2008 the youngest beluga at Vancouver Aquarium was named. Through a contest where people could vote for names the calf was given the name Tiqa. The five last names were Shiya, Sura, Kuvia, Mira and Tiqa. Tiqa was born on June 10th 2008 at Vancouver Aquarium and is the daughter of Qila, who was born at Vancouver Aquarium in the summer of 1995. Tiqa’s father is Imaq. Vancouver Aquarium has five belugas: Tiqa, Qila, Imaq, Aurora (Tiqa’s grandmother) and Kavna. Click here to read more about Vancouver Aquarium’s belugas.
Orca birth at Kamogawa Seaworld!
On October 13th 2008 the orca Lovey gave birth to a calf. Lovey is 10 years old (born on January 11th 1998 at Kamogawa Seaworld) and this calf was her first calf. The father of the calf is 22-year-old Oscar. At Kamogawa Seaworld live the calf’s grandparents Stella and Oscar and the calf’s aunts Lara and Ran II. Kamogawa Seaworld has 7 orcas and there are now 43 orcas in captivity.
Happy birthday Ariel!
On September 6th 2008 the dolphin Ariel at Kolmården Zoo turns 12 years old. Ariel was born at Kolmården and she is the daughter of Kolmården’s oldest dolphin, 35-year-old Vicky. Ariel is the sister of Luna (who lives at Kolmården) and she has several halfsiblings too. Her halfsister Lyra lives at Kolmården Zoo. Ariel is the mother of Kolmården’s youngest dolphin who was born on September 9th 2008. The calf is a little male and doesn’t have a name yet. Kolmården Zoo has 8 bottlenose dolphins: Vicky, Pichi, Nephele, Luna, Lyra, Lyra’s calf, Ariel and Ariel’s calf. Click here to read more about the dolphins at Kolmården.
The orca Ku is dead
The orca Ku who lived at Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium passed away on September 19th 2008. Ku was the only orca at Port of Nagoya Aquarium and she lived with several bottlenose dolphins. In July 2008 Ku stopped eating and since then she has been treated. Ku was captured in 1997 together with 4 other orcas that all are dead.
Dolphin calves born at Kolmården Zoo!!!
On September 6th 2008 the female dolphin Lyra at Kolmården gave birth to her first calf. The calf, who is a female, is the first dolphin born at Kolmården in 7 years. Three days later, on September 9th, the female dolphin Ariel gave birth to her first calf. Ariel’s calf is a male. The father of the calves is 25-year-old Pichi who arrived to Kolmården in 2005. The dolphin Kelly has passed away
The common dolphin Kelly who lived at Marineland New Zealand passed away in September 2008. She arrived at Marineland New Zealand in 1974 together with Shona who passed away in 2006. Kelly was 38 years old when she died, which is old for a common dolphin and she was the only dolphin at Marineland. Marineland New Zealand will close.
Dogs will replace belugas & dolphins
The belugas and pacific white-sided dolphins at John G. Shedd Aquarium will live at other dolphinariums from autumn 2008 to spring 2009, because their pools will be renovated. The belugas and the pacific white-sided dolphins have already been moved to Mystic Marine Life Aquarium and from October the 6 dogs Barney, Harley, Nico, Olivia, Widget and Wylie will be used to show Shedd Aquarium’s visitors how to train belugas and dolphins.
Frigg-Amanda turns 1 year!
Fjord&Baelt’s youngest porpoise, Frigg-Amanda, who was born last year turns 1 year in August! She was born August 8th 2007 and her mother is 12-year-old Freja. Frigg-Amanda is the first porpoise to be born at Fjord&Baelt, but also the first porpoise to be born in captivity. When Frigg-Amanda was weighed for the first time in November 2007 she weighed 24 kilograms. A couple of months later, in January 2008, she weighed 28 kilograms. Fjord&Baelt has 4 porpoises, 3 females and 1 male. The females are Frigg-Amanda, Freja and Sif and the male is Frigg-Amanda’s father Eigil. Click here to read more about Fjord&Baelt’s porpoises.
Lyra turns 9 years!
Lyra, the second youngest dolphin at Kolmården Zoo turns 9 July 12th! Lyra is the daughter of Flip (died in 2003) and Lotty (was moved to Marineland Antibes in 2005). She was born in Kolmården’s Dolphin Lagoon July 12th 1999 and was Lotty’s second calf. Lyra’s two brothers are Lotus (13 years) and Fenix (7 years). Lyra has several halfsiblings too. Two stranded pygmy killer whales
June 16th a pygmy killer whale named Pete stranded. He was taken to Mote Marine Lab where he is now on rehabilitation. Just a few hours after Pete’s arrival to Mote Marine Lab another pygmy killer whale named Dallas stranded. The two pygmy killer whales stranded in the same area.
The orca Halyn is dead
June 15th 2008 Seaworld San Antonio’s youngest orca Halyn passed away. She was born October 9th 2005 and was about 2,5 years when she died. Her mother Kayla, who lives at Seaworld Orlando, didn’t take care of Halyn when she was little so the orca trainers at Seaworld San Antonio took care of Halyn instead. Left at Seaworld San Antonio are the orcas Tuar, Unna, Keet & Kyuquot.
The beluga Qila has given birth to her calf!
June 10th Qila gave birth to her calf at Vancouver Aquarium. The birth could be watched at Vancouver Aquarium’s webcam Beluga Cam, where you now can watch the calf swim with its mother. The father of the calf is Imaq. Qila was born July 23rd 1995 and is the daughter of Aurora who lives at Vancouver Aquarium too.
The orca Lovey is pregnant!
The orca Lovey at Kamogawa Seaworld in Japan is pregnant for the first time. Lovey is 10 years old, born January 11th 1998. The calf will be born in October 2008 and the father is the male orca Oscar. The other orcas at Kamogawa Seaworld are Lovey’s parents Bingo and Stella and Lovey’s little sisters Ran II and Lara.
Another dolphin calf born at Dolfinarium Harderwijk!
June 8th 2008 another dolphin calf was born at Dolfinarium Harderwijk. This time it was 21-year-old Roxy who gave birth to her third calf. Her other two calves are Damsxi and Rocco who was born in 2001 and 2005. The new calf is a female.
Boudewijn Seapark's dolphin Milo is dead
Sunday May 25th 2008 the bottlenose dolphin Milo at Boudewijn Seapark was operated. Unfortunately Milo didn't survive the operation. Milo was nearly 9 years old, he was born at Boudewijn Seapark June 23rd 1999. Now there are 6 dolphins left at Boudewijn Seapark. It is hard to operate dolphins because dolphins have to think when they should breathe and for that reason dolphins can't sleep during the operation (dolphins never sleep, they just rest one part of the brain).
Dolphin calf born at Dolfinarium Harderwijk
May 22nd 2008 Finagain gave birth to a calf at Dolfianrium Harderwijk. Finagain is a 16-year-old bottlenose dolphin that also is the mother of 4-year-old Palawas. The new calf is about 0,9 meters.
Bottlenose dolphins to Georgia Aquarium
Georgia Aquarium in USA will build a dolphinarium for bottlenose dolphins. Right now Georgia Aquarium has belugas, but in 2010 the dolphinarium will be ready for the bottlenose dolphins.
Dolphin born at Seaworld Orlando
The bottlenose dolphin Kendall who lives at Seaworld Orlando gave birth to a calf April 18th 2008. Kendall was born June 7th 1995 and she is also the mother of the dolphins Kato and Jackson.
Parc Asterix's dolphins are on their way home
In October 2007 Parc Asterix's dolphins were moved to Dolfinarium Harderwijk. The reason was that their own home, Parc Asterix's dolphinarium, should be rebuilt. Now two of the dolphins, Peos and Bailey, have moved back to Parc Asterix and the rest of the dolphins will be back soon.
The world's oldest dolphin turns 55!
Nellie, the world's oldest dolphin was born February 27th 1953 at Marineland Florida. At that time, probably no one could suspect that she would one day be the world's oldest dolphin. But now Nellie turns 55 years old and that is a very impressive age for a dolphin! Normally dolphins live for 35 to 40 years, but in captivity there are a lot of dolphins that are older than that.
At Marineland Florida, where Nellie has lived her whole life, lives also 36 year old Alvin, 40 year old Chubby, 49 year old Lily, 38 year old Betty and 39 year old Pebbles + several younger dolphins.
There are a lot of old dolphins in Europe too: Fritz at Heidepark Soltau turns 50 years old this year, Josephine at Marineland Antibes turns 35 years old this year, Veera at Särkänniemi turns 30 years old this year, Skinny at Dolfinarium Harderwijk turns 46 years old this year, Smarty at Dolfianrium Harderwijk turns 45 years old this year and Vicky at Kolmården Zoo turns 35 years old this year.
New dolphinarium opens March 1st
The Commerson's dolphins Pepe, Keebler, Ross and Fabio have moved from Seaworld San Diego. They are now living at Aquatica, a new parc that opens March 1st. The four dolphins are all males and left behind at Seaworld San Diego are the two females Betsy and Ringer and the male Juan.
New dolphins at Minnesota Zoo
The bottlenose dolphins Allie and April arrived to Minnesota Zoo January 14th 2008. They came from Dolphin Connection. April is 41 years old (born in 1967) and mother of Allie who is 21 years old (born April 1st 1987). With Allie and April there are now 4 dolphins at Minnesota Zoo, the two others are 44-year-old Semo and his daughter Spree who was born in 2002.
44 orcas left
Nootka V, one of the orcas at Marineland Canada died January 8th 2008. Left at Marineland Canada are Kiska, Athena and Ikaika and there are now total 44 orcas in captivity. Unfortunately several dolphins have died this year: the bottlenose dolphin April died January 8th, the bottlenose dolphin Micco died January 14th and the bottlenose dolphin Mango died in January.
Happy birthday LUNA!
The youngest dolphin at Kolmården Zoo, Luna, turns 7 years old January 10th. Luna is the daughter of 35-year-old Vicky and Flip who died in 2003. Luna's big sister Ariel (born in 1996) and their halfsister Lyra (born in 1999) live at Kolmården too. The other two dolphins at Kolmården are 25-year-old Nephele and 26-year-old Pichi.
