One of the dolphins at Kolmården is examined by its trainer
The husbandry behaviours are behaviours that the dolphins are trained to
do to make medical examinations, for example blood samples, easier. From
dolphins the blood samples are taken from the dolphins’ tail fluke and since
there are, like humans, some dolphins who think it is a bit scary with blood
samples different dolphins need more or less training to feel comfortable with
blood samples. Other examples of husbandry behaviours are that the dolphins are
trained to come up on a scales so that the trainers/veterinaries can weigh them
or that the dolphins are trained to lie still in different positions so the
trainers/veterinaries can make different examinations.
