Katrl arrived at Shedd Aquarium in 1994 together with Piquet and a male named Quitz (deceased). During the winter 2008-2009 Katrl and the rest of Shedd Aquarium's pacific white-sided dolphins (and belugas) lived at Mystic Aquarium since Shedd Aquarium was being re-built but in May 2009 they were moved back to Shedd Aquarium where Katrl lives today.
Katrl and the rest of Shedd Aquarium’s cetaceans are trained with symbols that first and foremost are used to get the right dolphin to the right trainer at the training sessions. Katrl’s symbol is a red and yellow plus.Katrl measures 2,13 meters and weighs 118 kilograms (length and weight 2008). Her name means “to breathe air”.
