Relatives: the sons Qannik and Miki and several stillborn calves
Mauyak was captured on July 9th 1984. In 1997 she arrived at Shedd Aquarium on a breeding loan from Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and it is Shedd Aquarium that is Mauyak’s actual home. The reason why she currently lives at Mystic Aquarium is that Shedd Aquarium is re-building its beluga centres. When Mauyak had lived at Shedd Aquairum for three years she gave birth to a calf that was named Qannik. Seven years later, in 2007, Qannik was moved to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and the same year Mauyak gave birth to another son, Miki. About one year later Miki and Mauyak were moved to Mystic Aquarium together with the other belugas from Shedd Aquarium. During her time at Mystic Aquarium Mauyak could often be seen at Mystic Aquarium's web cam. In spring 2009 Mauyak was moved back to Shedd Aquarium together with the rest of Shedd Aquarium's belugas and it is at Shedd she is living today.
Mauyak is the dominant female beluga in Shedd Aquarium’s beluga group and she weighs 544 kilograms and measures 3,35 meters (length and weight 2007). Since Shedd Aquarium’s belugas (and pacific white-sided dolphins) are trained with symbols it is easy to identify Mauyak when she is training as you just have to look for her symbol: a yellow star. Mauyak's son Qannik unfortunately passed away in March 2009 at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium but Miki is still living at Shedd Aquarium. Mauyak is currently participating in Shedd Aquarium's show "Fantasea".
