Puiji was born in 1986 and was captured when she was about 3 years old, on August 1st 1989. In July 2006 Puiji gave birth to her, so far, only calf. At first it was thought that the calf was a male but after a while it was discovered that the calf actually was a female and she was named Bella. In August/September 2008 Puiji, Bella and the rest of the belugas at Shedd Aquarium were moved to Mystic Aquarium since Shedd Aquarium was going to be re-built. In the spring of 2009 they all were moved back to Shedd Aquarium and that is where both Puiji and Bella are living today. Since all of Shedd Aquarium’s cetaceans are trained with symbols it is easy to identify them when they are training. Puiji’s symbol is a red and yellow cross. Puiji weighs 680 kilograms and measures 3,29 meters (length and weight 2007).
In December 2009 Puiji gave birth to her second calf. The calf is a male and has been named Nunavik. Today Puiji lives together with her youngest calf and Naya, Miki and Bella while the rest of Shedd Aquarium's belugas participate in Shedd Aquarium's show "Fantasea".
