Nunavik was born on December 14th 2009 at Shedd Aquarium and is the son of Puiji and Naluark. Unlike most whales and dolphins that are born with tail first Nunavik was born with head first. At birth he measured 1,6 meters and weighed about 73,5 kilograms. He began to nurse in the morning of December 15th 2009, the day after the birth. In the beginning of March 2010 Nunavik was introduced to his sister Bella and his halfbrother Miki and it is with them and his mother Puiji and the female Naya he lives today. Shedd Aquarium's three other belugas, Kayavak, Naluark and Mauyak, are participating in Shedd Aquarium's show "Fantasea". In March 2010 Nunavik weighed 147,5 kilograms. Three months later, in June 2010, he weighed more than 180 kilograms.
In June 2010 Nunavik was named and his name means "friendly, beautiful and wild". The name was chosen through a voting where people could vote for the following names: Nunavik, Ipiktok, Opipok, Tuwawi, Nilak, Kimalu, Mituk, Aniuk, Aput and Akiak and after the 3200 votes Puiji's little son was named Nunavik!
