Katina
was captured in October 1978 and arrived at Marineland Canada the same month.
There she lived until June 1979 and after that time she spent the summers at
Seaworld Ohio and the winters at Seaworld San Diego until she was moved to
Seaworld Orlando in November 1984. In July 1984 it had been discovered that
Katina was pregnant and in September 1985 she gave birth to her first calf. The
calf, who was a female and was named Kalina, was not just Katina’s first calf
but also the first orca to be born in captivity. When Kalina was a little more
than three years old, in November 1988, Katina gave birth to her second calf
that was named Katerina and about five years later, in September 1993, she gave
birth to her third calf named Taku. When Taku, who was Katina’s first son, was
about 3 years old Katina gave birth to her fourth calf named Unna. Less than
three years later (in May 1999) Katina’s daughter Katerina passed away and
about three years after that Katina gave birth to her second son named Ikaika.
In September 2006 Katina gave birth to a daughter named Nalanie and the father
of the little calf was Katina’s own son Taku. About one year later Taku passed
away.
Today
Katina lives at Seaworld Orlando together with her daughters Kalina and Nalanie
and her grandson Trua. She measures 4,97 meters and weighs 2545 kilograms
(weight and length 2005). Katina is pregnant and will give birth to her calf in October 2010.
