Starkey
was captured on August 13th 1983 together with two other female
bottlenose dolphins named Lily and Mimi. The same year as they were captured
they all arrived at New York Aquarium where they lived until they were moved to
Seaworld Orlando in 1992. After just a few months at Seaworld all of the three
females became pregnant and Starkey gave birth to her first calf on December 30th
1993. Unfortunately her calf was stillborn and neither Lily’s nor Mimi’s calf
survived either. On June 24th 1996 Starkey gave birth to her second
calf named Hutch and on June 22nd 1999 she gave birth to her third
calf named Kiwi. Both of these two calves were males. On May 20th
2002 Starkey gave birth to her first daughter named Mango and when Mango was
three years old Starkey gave birth to another daughter named Stella.
Today
Starkey lives in Seaworld Orlando’s dolphin centre Dolphin Nursery together with her youngest calf (and several other dolphins) born on June 19th 2009. Unfortunately
two of her previous calves, Kiwi and Mango have passed away, but both Hutch and
Stella are currently living at Discovery Cove.
