Whitewings
was captured in 1971 and was presumed to be born in 1966. Until 2001 Whitewings
lived together with orcas but in 2001 Vancouver Aquarium’s last orca Bjossa was
moved to Seaworld San Diego. The same year a male pacific white-sided dolphin named
Spinnaker arrived at Vancouver Aquarium. Whitewings and Spinnaker lived
together until Whitewings unfortunately passed away on January 24th
2002. In 1997 it was discovered that Whitewings had a lot of stones and other
debris in her stomach and the most of it was removed but in 2001 the debris
began to get stuck in Whitewings’ rectum and the rest of the debris had to be
removed. The day before Whitewings’ death much of the debris had been removed
from her stomach but when the rest of it was going to be removed the following
dayWhitewings suddenly stopped breathing and her heart stopped. Even though
Vancouver Aquarium’s staff tried to get her heart started again Whitewings
unfortunately passed away.
